WHO ARE WE?

THOMBAYAN

Thomas Daquioag founded Thombayan Artspace in 2021 with the intent to showcase the works of emerging and renown Filipino visual artists. It is an alternative space that provides not only a space to present contemporary works, but also encourage creative practitioners and art supporters to expand the current discussions and developments in Philippine Art. The artspace is also a venue embracing various creative expressions---photography, printmaking, and new media. It is also a restoration laboratory and venue for art education, art history, and art resource. Thombayan Art Space is proud to work with a talented group of contemporary Filipino artists.

THE OWNER

Thomas D. Daquioag

As if by fate, Thomas Daquioag holds a special stature in a highly convoluted Philippine art scene. As an award winning visual artist he has been competitive in his craft that he has found friends along the way. Versed in various visual styles, Daquioag has been known for his meticulous rendering in his art restoration work and community art workshops. Lastly, as if basking on its daily eclectic ambiance, Daquioag holds court and is firmly rooted in Bangkal, the only bohemian location in posh Makati known for its topsy-turvy treasure trove of found arcana, reusable furniture and discarded family mementoes.

It is in this inherent artistic lineage, acquired advocacies with Bangkal’s brooding local character that Daquioag breeds his newest creative turf, Thombayan Art Gallery, an artist-run space focusing on retelling the stories of our confusing times. Using contemporary art and its discontents, Thombayan bears witnesses to these daily occurrence on a hapless people with a rich colonial past, mired by current political uncertainty.

As this status remains underway, Thombayan art gallery inaugural exhibit Hari-Harian ushers in much of our current collective preoccupation given that the national election is more than a month away. Opening on March 26, some of the featured artists who are Daquioag’s friends are social realists Jose Tence Ruiz, and Renato Habulan, who curated the exhibition. Salingpusa members Mark Justiniani, Elmer Borlongan, Manny Garibay, Ferdie Montemayor, and Jim Orencio. Venice Biennale representative Alfredo Aquilizan. Other artists joining the inaugural are Plet Bolipata, Pandy Aviado and Wire Tuazon.
